Get Unparalleled Contaminant Detection In Bulk Foods with MDX!

With a plethora of packaged bulk-flow food options on our supermarket shelves today, it’s important manufacturers are sure that the product they deliver is free from foreign contaminants and safe for consumption.

To ensure maximum safety standards are being met at all stages of the production process, many bulk-flow food processors and manufacturers have turned to x-ray, and in particular MDX (Material Discrimination Technology), to carry out reliable and efficient food safety inspection.

Bulk food products typically include packaged consumables such as cereals, sweets, dried fruits, vegetables, grains and nuts that need to be carefully assessed before reaching consumers at the final point of purchase.

With high consumer expectations and strict safety standards governing today’s food industry it’s no surprise companies, manufacturers and food processors have begun using the power of MDX to achieve more reliable and accurate bulk food inspection.

Setton Pistachio Case Study

Setton Pistachio

The second largest pistachio nut processor in the U.S., Setton Pistachio, introduced bulk MDX inspection because conventional product inspection technologies were not producing adequate results in contaminant detection.

While traditional methods were capable of scrutinising bulk foods for metal based contaminants, other foreign bodies were not being intercepted reliably. As a major safety concern to consumers, Setton Pistachio incorporated MDX technology with their previous control methods to establish a comprehensive quality control process.

This had the advantage of not only strengthening the safety standards of their product line, but also preventing damage to downstream processing equipment.

Higos El Pajarero Case Study

Dried Figs

Bulk MDX inspection has been adopted within the dried fruit industry to advance the quality standards and processing procedures traditionally being practiced.

Spanish business Higos El Pajarero has pioneered MDX technology to heighten the safety and quality of its dried figs production. Higos supplies figs wholesale to a host of regions across Europe, distributing through large scale retailers that have strict codes of practice when it comes to quality and safety.

To meet these strict requirements, Higos El Pajarero adopted bulk MDX inspection as a more efficient alternative to the common industry standard of visual inspection. This allowed Higos El Pajarero to detect and reject the many kilograms of stone contaminants - the same size and colour as the figs, making traditional detection extremely difficult, which had previously made their way into the final packaged product.

In addition to greater quality control, the system also generated a substantial increase in product line efficiency, allowing loose flow products to be analysed in high volume, saving time and costs.

Lone Star Case Study

Lone Star Beef

Meat manufacturers across the globe have also been taking advantage of the benefits of MDX technology to inspect their bulk packaged produce before distribution.

In the case of Texas beef processor Lone Star, MDX provided a solution to the two core challenges facing the production process: identifying foreign contaminants and measuring accurate chemical lean (CL) values.

Lone Star were getting a high level of error from using metal detectors and manual inspection to find buckshot metal contaminants within produce, and was able to improve results by making the shift to material discrimination technology.

With MDX able to efficiently analyse a range of densities for unwanted foreign materials, Lone Star was able to significantly increase contaminant detection rates of buckshot. In addition to ensuring a higher quality final product, Lone Star transformed its method of measuring CL values, using MDX to eliminate the sampling error present in the traditional core sampling approach.
