Every 2 hours, bowel cancer claims a life. That’s around 100 people every week or over 5,300 each year. But detected early, 99% of bowel cancers can be successfully treated or even prevented. In memory of Tracey Diamond, sister to FPE’s own Tania and Jodie Carey, the company has proudly supported the Jodi Lee Foundation, which is the leading voice for bowel cancer prevention, for the past 9 years.
Part of our support includes regularly doing the JLF Trek! This year the team will be hiking 70.5km through Kuipto Forest in the South Mount Lofty Rangers of South Australia to raise much-needed funds and awareness for the cause. We thought we’d take the time to share a little bit more about the JLF Trek 2023 before the big day and what you can do to help.
What is the Jodi Lee Foundation?
The Jodi Lee Foundation is dedicated to helping Australians prevent bowel cancer. Each year, they host a number of fundraising events (including the JLF Trek 2023), national initiatives and campaigns to help raise awareness of bowel cancer.
Why does FPE support the Jodi Lee Foundation?
In 2014, Tracey Diamond (daughter of FPE founder Brian Carey and twin sister to General Manager Tania Carey), lost her fight with bowel cancer. In her memory, FPE donated Tracey’s salary to the Jodi Lee Foundation from 2014-2016. Since then, FPE has become a partner to the foundation and regularly participates in their fundraising events.
The JLF Trek 2023
Taking place over 2 days, this year’s JLF trek will involve a 70.5km hike through Kuipto Forest in the South Mount Lofty Rangers of South Australia. With 9 of our very own team members and their families taking part this year.
The FPE team taking part
Tania Carey, General Manager
“This will make hike no. 8 for me – my twin sister Tracey’s lucky number. And, this year will mark 8 years since she left. Bowel cancer changed my life. WILL 72ks BE EASY? NOPE! WORTH IT? ABSOLUTELY. In each step we will remember those we loved and lost!”
Andrew Butcher, Financial Controller / Operations Improvement Manager
“To remember Tracey, I have been participating in the Jodi Lee Foundation hike for many years and this year I will be again remembering Tracey and also trying to raise money to help raise awareness in bowel cancer. Tracey was someone who I had the utmost respect for and will always remember her for the genuine care she had for others.”
Geoff Nugent aka “Chef Geoff”, Product Specialist
“Having lost my mother to Cancer in 2009, I know first-hand how hard it is to watch a loved one go through the pain and treatment associated with Cancer and I will definitely be thinking of her when I’m out there. I hope that by raising money and awareness for this cause, it is a step towards reducing the number of people that have to go through the treatment and suffering that too many people have to go through!”
Kylie Tye, Customer Service
“By doing the trek and receiving donations all money received helps towards future funding into research and support. Any contribution I can make to that makes me feel good. The trek is also a good challenge to push ourselves outside of our comfort zone.”
Craig Perrau, Territory Manager NSW/WA
“I am doing the JLF Trek with my wife Jacki who lost her brother Wes to bowel cancer 3 years ago. We both want to help raise awareness and funds to help in the fight against bowel cancer.”
Stuart Hincksman, Business Development Manager
“The JLF trek is something that I have known about for many years through FPE involvement – I wanted to take on a physical challenge at the same time support the good work of the JLF foundation, so this was a great opportunity for me.”
How you can help
1. Raise awareness
All of the funds raised for the JLF Trek 2023 will be going towards the amazing work that the Jodi Lee Foundation does to raise awareness of bowel cancer. If you have the time, we’d love for you to speak to your family, friends, or co-workers about the upcoming JLF Trek and how they can get involved.
While your warm wishes are all we need to get our team across the finish line, donations to the Jodi Lee Foundation are always appreciated. If you’d like to donate specifically to the JLF Trek, you can donate by clicking the link below. All donations are tax-deductible.
3. Free cancer screening
From your 50th birthday onwards, the government will send you a screening test through the National Bowel Cancer Screening Program (NBCSP) every 2 years. Early detection is key to preventing and treating bowel cancer, so we encourage you to do the test.
We want to say thank you!
At FPE, we hold the Jodi Lee Foundation very close to our heart. So we wanted to say a massive thank you to staff, customers and partners who have supported us and the foundation over the last 9 years. Together, we can beat bowel cancer.
