Fat Analysis Equipment: Chemical Lean Testing

For the modern meat manufacturer or meat processor, the old, outdated ways of chemical lean testing no longer cut it. Today’s manufacturers want more from their fat analysis equipment. They want safe, non-invasive, efficient and precise ways to perform fat analysis and chemical lean testing; anything else simply isn’t good enough.

For safe and cost-effective chemical lean testing you can’t go past Eagle’s innovative FA3 Series of X-Ray food inspection and fat analysis equipment. This state-of-the-art fat analysis and chemical lean testing machine can simultaneously perform the following inline meat inspection checks:

      • fat/lean analysis
      • contamination detection
      • mass measurement
      • protein analysis
      • moisture analysis

The Eagle FA3 inline fat analysis equipment makes use of Eagle X-Ray Dual Energy Absorptiometry (DEXA) technology to discriminate between fat and lean portions of meat, providing chemical lean testing measurements to better than +/- 1CL accuracy.

Also, where other systems and fat scanner machines aren’t capable of inspecting every single inch of a meat product, DEXA can. DEXA is already widely used in the medical field, and is now used as a non-invasive, inline method that analyses 100% of the product to determine chemical lean content for meat products.

Incorporating efficient and repeatable techniques for fat analysis and chemical lean testing is an easy way to reduce any unnecessary losses your business incurs through inaccuracy, it’s as simple as that. So if you’re looking to reduce costs and improve food quality assurance you can’t go past the Eagle PI FA3; this is one premium fat analysis machine.

What methods are used to measure chemical lean?

Chemical Lean (CL) calculation is the amount of lean red meat compared to the amount of fat in a sample of meat. There are a variety of different sampling and testing methods used across the meat industry to determine this ratio, such as the Soxhlet method, Anyl-Ray & NIR/NIT methods, but none of these are as efficient or effective as Eagle’s Fat Analysis equipment.

Soxhlet is the most commonly used method, but his method is an off-line test on a small sample, it is not nearly as comprehensive as using one of Eagle’s state of the art X-Ray food inspection systems. According to Aus Meat Ltd – the group responsible for establishing and maintaining national industry standards for meat production and processing – there are 10 accredited methods for measuring chemical lean:
      1. Soxhlet – Ether extraction method
      2. Babcock – Acid digestion method
      3. Foss-let – Specific gravity of extract method
      4. Anyl-Ray – X-Ray absorption method
      5. Microwave – Moisture determination
      6. MQ27 – Chemical Lean Meat Analyser
      7. FOSS MeatMaster™ X-Ray CL Analyser
      8. Foss FoodScan™ NIR CL System
      9. CEM Smart Trac – Fat & Moisture Analyser
      10. Smiths Detection Eagle™ Carton FA
Eagle’s Fat Analysis Systems are the ideal tool for inspection of meat for chemical lean determination.
